2023 pork and prunes

2023 pork and prunes

2023

From $64.00 per 750ml

    Description

Back in 1983 Zinfandel was planted on the western side of Orange on what is now known as the Cargo Road Vineyard. The vineyard is a remarkable piece of land geographically. It's about 850m above sea level and it snows there every so often, but it doesn’t get frosts. It’s a sunny site with a history of long, dry autumns.

In 2014 James Sweetapple planted what the Italians call primitivo on the property and we then had the opportunity to see the two grapes growing side by side. Theoretically they are the same grape coming from the same country, namely croatia, but they have been keep apart for so long many believe they have developed their own personalities.

So, in the vineyard we allowed both to prune up prior to picking, then made them into separate wines. A blend was investigated between the two which worked and was then further enhanced by the addition of mclaren vale shiraz to create a zinfandel (fruity), shiraz (colour and mid palate), primitivo (structure) blend. It was an interesting exercise and a fascinating wine.

Try drinking it in the first 4 years with meat dishes with a bit of sweetness such as duck and plum sauce or venison and chocolate.
